What is the deal with Call of Duty system link?

CoD4 is an amazing game. I may like it more than Halo 3. But when it comes time to system link, we always end up playing Halo 3.

On both CoD2 and CoD4, if you do a system link match, the host console can only support one player. Every other console, up to 4. But that means that with two consoles, you can only have five players. Compare with Halo, where you can have 8 players play with two consoles.

I find it hard to believe this is a feature. If it limited you to one player per Xbox, then maybe, just maybe, I would believe that this was on purpose, on the grounds that split-screen multiplayer is inferior to online or system link. But that isn’t the case. It limits you to one player on the host console, and then up to 4 players on the other console(s). That can’t possibly be on purpose.

But then that leaves us with, what… a bug? But I find that equally hard to believe that a bug this significant has survived three iterations of the game, unfixed. Especially in the age of next-gen consoles, where patches can be distributed over the internet.

I’ve scoured the internet. There is no fix, this happens to everyone who has an Xbox 360 (although, I’ve heard mixed reports that this actually works on a PS3; can anyone verify this?), and nobody is happy about it.

So what the hell is going on here, Infinity Ward?

Actually, you know what? I don’t really care. Just get off your asses and fix this. If not in a CoD4 patch, than in CoD5. There is no reason for this to go on. Myself and many other gamers will be grateful that we can finally have CoD LAN parties. Because CoD fucking kicks ass. But this whole system link bullshit does not.

The Hard Six was created fourteen months ago to serve as my personal website.

It was mildly successful at first, receiving a handful of Diggs, a couple hundred hits a month, and most notably, a link from Daring Fireball.

Then it sputtered. My life began to radically change in front of me - my intended degree, my job, my home, and my friends - were all in flux. The Hard Six fell by the wayside as managing my rapidly transforming life became the priority.

But now its back.

My life is back on track. I am working towards a BA in Computer Science at Skidmore College. I am going to work for Apple Retail. I am going to live in Saratoga Springs. And I have many, wonderful friends and co-workers.

So, readers, enjoy The Hard Six, version 3.

One of the above sentences stands out among the rest.

“I am going to work for Apple Retail.”

You read that right. I work for Apple. And I am sure you know what that means.

Apple Inc. is no longer a topic that will be discussed on The Hard Six, per my employment agreement with Apple. The focus of this website will shift primarily towards discussion of the internet as it evolves around us and my favorite form of entertainment, video games.

When I say Apple will no longer be a part of The Hard Six, I mean it in the most comprehensively possible way. Anything even vaguely related to Apple will not be discussed here. Emails regarding Apple will be ignored. Comments regarding Apple will be deleted before they are even seen by anyone else. I mean it. It simply isn’t worth my job.

I don’t like it any more than you do. I liked writing about Apple. But I like working for Apple more. So that settles that.

Now that that’s out of the way, I’m going to go play Rock Band and finish my XHTML and CSS tutorial.

GameSpot, C|Net, and Larry Ashe,

I’m sure I’m not the first to tell you this, and I’m sure I won’t be the last. Today, I cancelled my premium subscription to GameSpot - which I’ve had for 3 years - because you have officially sold out and can no longer be trusted.

I’ve moved my flag over to 1up.com. The quality of your site has been declining since Kavasin left, and firing Jeff Gerstmann for calling it like it is due to pressure from Edios was the last straw. Don’t bullshit us, we all know thats exactly what happened. For firing an honest man, for disrespecting and lying to your customers, you will no longer get another dime or visit from me.

And, you know what? Thousands of gamers across the globe agree with me. I hope your precious ads make up for all the paying customers you have lost.

To any GameSpot reviewers reading this: quit. Quit before you are fired for calling it like it is, just like your editorial director was. Quit, partner up with Jeff, and make a new, independent, and honest gaming review site. Given all the publicity this debacle has caused, I can promise you thousands of visitors and subscribers.

Ashe, you’re truly despicable, and the last thing America needs is more dishonest suits. Please retire before you cause any more damage or destroy any more jobs.

Sincerely,

-Scott Nicholas

But if Zune1 isn’t an XBox, why does everyone seeking to defend Zune argue that since the XBox was a success, Zune will be too? And no, that J Allard heads up both divisions is not a valid reason. Here’s why:

And thanks to Leopard, we can see this little easter egg better than we ever have before!

CSSEdit 2.0 is an amazing app, I use it all the time. The Xray feature is worth the price of admission alone, throw in the live previews, the built in validator, the interface (look at those tabs!), it’s just well worth the $29.95 in every way.

But it gets better. I love this little easter egg that MacRabbit threw into the icon:

Hilarious.
